Hundreds gather to celebrate Mother’s Day at the Grotto
On Sunday May 8, 2016 we celebrated Mother’s Day in a very special way: by holding our two annual masses at the foot of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto and Tepeyac de San Antonio. Although rain threatened to make its presence throughout the event, hundreds gathered to listen to Fr. Leo Perez’s 9 AM English mass, and a very personal yet beautiful homily delivered by Bro. Dan Ziegler. Scores of white and red carnations were given to each of the mothers at the end of the lovely service, along with Fr. Leo’s uplifting blessings.
Later on at 11:30 AM, Fr. Saturnino Lajo celebrated the Spanish mass with almost 1,000 attendees. Fr. Lajo arrived with a colorful bouquet of roses to be placed at the altar to Our Lady of Lourdes and elevated his heartfelt prayers for all the attendees, particularly for the mothers on their special day. A group of enthusiastic Matachines -composed of men, women and even a few children- was present to dedicate a celebratory dance to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Warm Mariachi music gracefully infused the event with classic Mexican songs. Although we did receive a bit of rain nearing the end of the Spanish service, the large crowd did not dissipate until they received the final blessing by Fr. Lajo.
In addition to streaming both events live here on our website, we were grateful to have had the Spanish mass covered by a few of the local media outlets. The San Antonio Express-News was present to capture a few images of the event, and shared them on their online site My San Antonio. You can enjoy the brief article and the images at this link. Below you’ll find a the LiveStream recording of the English & Spanish masses plus a few of our own pictures from both these joyful events…enjoy!
