Thousands in Zambia welcomed Bishop Duffy home last Wednesday for his burial.   We would like to share a short note we received  from Bishop Evans Chinyama Chinyemba, OMI, and a Tribute article from a local newspaper.  We have also now received Bishop Chinyemba final tribute which you can read and download here “The Journey back home of Bishop Paul Duffy, OMI”

Dear All, Greetings from Mongu.

Just a quick note to let you know that the burial of late Paul Duffy, OMI went well. Thousands of people welcomed the body of Paul Duffy as he entered Mongu town. The Cathedral grounds could not hold all the people who welcomed the body. Some have to remain outside the walls. Monday (yesterday) the burial took place with Mass at the Stadium. Again, thousands attended the Mass and burial took place at the Cathedral grounds. We had to allow just a few people into the grounds for the burial after which people came in. It was a mind and heart changing experience for the many people who had been in contact with the late bishop.

Thank you to everyone for your support and prayers.

Bishop Evans Chinyama Chinyemba, OMI

Tribute to Bishop Duffy

The Post Newspapers Zambia.-

WEDNESDAY August 31, 2011 was supposed to mark the 14th anniversary for the iconic former Bishop of Zambia’s Mongu Diocese Paul Duffy’s episcopal consecration.

Bishop Duffy spent 14 of those years at the helm of Zambia’s nascent Diocese, Mongu and within that time, his name became synonymous with Western Province and the quest for social justice.

There is very little to say about Bishop Duffy that has not been arrayed in the public limelight, yet the outpouring of grief and celebration of his life continue to abound from those that followed his aspiration and inspiration.

Mongu Diocese Bishop Evans Chinyemba took over the baton from Bishop Duffy on May 28, this year at a landmark celebration held at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral in Mongu.

When the faithful converged at the Cathedral last Wednesday, with a view to continuing with their prayers for Bishop Duffy, Bishop Chinyemba said in his message on the occasion that his predecessor was a selfless person.

“In the year 1997 on August 31st, Fr Paul Duffy, at that time Bishop-elect was consecrated as Bishop of the new Mongu Diocese. Today, 31st August 2011, we look back 14 years ago and see the wonders God has done in this Mongu Diocese,” Bishop Chinyemba said. “We are looking back also and seeing how the late Bishop Emeritus Paul Duffy has led the Diocese through the 14 years.”
